Since The capital city of Malaysia is one of our favourite cities in all the South East Asia, we spent a lot of time here. Therefor we gathered in this article, all the places that you must see when visiting Kuala Lumpur.
When is the best time to visit Kuala Lumpur?
Since Malaysia has a tropical rainforest climate, the temperatures vary between 25-35 C throughout the year. Also, you should consider that the monsoon season is between October-March.
How expensive is Kuala Lumpur?
Generally speaking, KL is a rather affordable city. For instance, you can find great accommodation options for 40-80$ a night. In addition, food can be as cheap as 3$/person/meal.
How many days you should spend here?
Although we visited the vast majority of the tourist attractions in roughly 4 days, with good planning, you could see everything in 3. So for a nice trip, you’d need at least 3 days to see all the hot spots.
How to move around Kuala Lumpur?
Since the public transport is widely available and affordable, you can use the MRT or bus to get around the city. However, Grab taxi is really cheap, I’d recommend you to install the app and just use that instead.
Where do you stay?
Kuala Lumpur is famous for its accommodation options, most of them having those iconic infinity pools with stunning views of Petronas Towers. Truth being told, the city changes so very often that in 3 months or less, whatever accommodation had amazing views, might not have it by the time you get there.
We read a lot of articles and did a lot of research and on our first visit we picked The Face Suites, because they were supposed to have a direct view of the Petronas Towers. However, in no time, they built The Platinum Suites and now the Face suites no longer have a view towards the tower.
Last time we were in KL, we ended up picking an AirBnb called CoBnB which offered gorgeous views of the Berhad Bank from the room and an unobstructed view of the towers from the infinity pool.
If luxury is what you’re looking for, then the best option for you is the Four Seasons hotel. The rooms have a direct view of the park that’s right in front of the towers, and the towers themselves. The hotel also hosts Malaysia’s Best bar in 2024.
Where do you eat?
Kuala Lumpur is a mix of cultures which makes up for an amazing culinary diversity and experience. From hawkers stalls to Michelin Star restaurants, there are so many foods to try. If you feel like there are too many options and you don’t know where to start of what to pick, you can opt for a street food tour.
Jalan Alor – one of the most popular places to try the street food in KL, is the perfect spot to start your culinary experience. If you come here, make sure you try the traditional malaysian desert, caled Piri Piri and the local fruits.
Close to Jalan Alor is our favourite restaurant in KL, called Halab KL, It’s a syrian-yemeni restaurant, and i recommend you to try their arabic shawarma, the grill and the hummus. Pair the food with a fresh juice and if you fancy some dessert, you should order their instagram worthy sweets which are to die for!
If you are searching for a specialty coffee and a nice place for brunch, then definitely go to Feeka Coffee Roasters. The cold brew here is fantastic, and if you are going to grab a bite, both the avocado toast with poached eggs and the salmon are delicious dishes worth trying.
If you fancy a Michelin Stared dinner, i do recommend you to try Beta KL. The restaurant features a cylindrical bar right in the middle, which is absolutely stunning. Both the food and the cocktails are fairly priced for a Michelin Star restaurant. The reason we picked this restaurant is that it features elevated Malay food.
Another restaurant that was awarded two Michelin stars is Dewakan. We had the pleasure to dine here and i was super impressed by the fact that the dining experience starts with a walk through the kitchen and a small presentation of the ingredients used in the courses. They also have two pairing options for their course menu, one of them being non-alcoholic. The restaurants features an amazing view over the city!
If you’re looking for a special experience, then one of the most unique restaurants we’ve tried is Hornbill Restaurant & Cafe. The restaurant is situated right in the heart of KL’s bird park and offers you the opportunity to see from up close and feed some amazing birds. Be careful when you get there, in front of the restaurant you might find a lot of monekys.
Places you have to see in Kuala Lumpur
Batu Caves
The 272 rainbow steps are probably the most famous tourist attraction in the city. Since the stairs have been painted in 2018, they are still considered a somewhat new attraction.
Batu Caves represents a pilgrimage place, and it’s considered a really important temple for Hindu. That means the entry is free, but you do have to cover up your knees and shoulders, otherwise you’ll have to buy a scarf at the entrance.
Eco-Forest Park
Nestled in the city center, the Eco Forest Park can be considered one of the best kept secrets of Kuala Lumpur. Here you can find enough hiking trails you keep you busy an entire day. You can take a walk around the tropical rainforest and also hike up on the suspension bridges. In addition, this is a good spot where you can just get away from the noise of the city and just unwind. Additionally, from the bridges you get to spot some of the tallest skyscrapers of KL.
Petronas Towers
The iconic towers are a must see. Under the towers there’s one of the most popular malls in Kuala lumpur, called Suria KLCC. In front of the mall is a park where each night you can witness a light and water show. The entrance is completely free. You can actually visit the towers and if you’re going there with the kids, just keep in mind that at the ground floor there’s also an aquarium. You can buy the tickets here. Additionally you can get your picture taken in front of the towers by one of the many photographeres there. It’s going to cost around 3$ (15 RM). The towers are impressive by day, but they are absolutely stunning by night.
KL Tower
The best view of the Petronas Towers has to be from KL Tower. Menara Tower (also known as KL Tower) is a 421-metre-tall telecommunication tower in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is the world’s seventh-tallest tower. You can buy the admission ticket here. The tower offers a range of activities, like a sky deck and a sky box. The best time to go is right before sunset, so you can see the towers during the day and during the night when they light up. The tower is on a hill, so it offers unique views over the entire city. If you fancy it, you can also get a coffee or a cocktail at the bar on the observation deck.
Bukit Bintang
Kuala Lumpur’s shopping street is nested in Bukit Bintang. Here you can find the most popular shopping centers, hawker stalls and night markets. The malls are seasonaly decorated for the most important celebrations of the year in muslim, chinese and hindu communities. The best malls you can visit here are: Pavilion – for luxury goods, Low Yat Plaza – for electronic gadgets, Berjaya Times Square – the 13th biggest mall in the world, also has the biggest indoor theme park in Malaysia etc. In this neighbourhood you can also find the most popular Hawkers Stall, called Jalan Alor. This street is a must see because of the cheap food and the wide range of fresh exotic fruits that you can try. Close to the night market, you can also visit some of KL’s prettiest streets, decorated with brightly coloured murals.
Thean Hou Temple
One of the biggest Chinese temples in Kuala Lumpur, is known for its red decorations. The entrance is free, and depending on the month you’re visiting it, you might witness different celebrations like Mid Autrumn Festival or the Chinese New Year.
